Enneagram 9—Secrets Revealed!
If you look into Enneagram Nines, you’ll likely find them described as “The Peacemaker.” You’ll read that they’re easygoing, accepting, patient, and conflict-avoidant. After years of working with Nines, I’ve also noticed some additional interesting little patterns that don’t always make it into the books. Some are quirks. Some are hidden strengths. Some are things Nines themselves don’t always realize about themselves until someone points them out. Are they true of every Nine? Probably not. But I’ve seen them often enough that they’ve caught my attention.
Here are three of them:
1. Nines Are Often Mistaken for Twos
People confuse these two types all the time. Both can be warm. Both can be kind. Both can be accommodating.
Nines, compared to Twos, have a more comfortable energy.
When you’re around a Nine, they can make you feel at ease too. They’re usually not super intense. Or demanding. They’re usually not asking you to carry a lot emotionally.
2. Nines Secretly Worry That They’re Not More Passionate
Nines often look around and see all these other people who seem driven by this huge passion. People with big dreams. Big goals. Big emotions. Big personalities.
Many Nines quietly wonder if something is wrong with them because they aren’t always driven by the same level intensity as those around them.
Many Nines worry that they’re somehow less passionate than everyone else. Less ambitious. Less motivated. Less alive? What they often fail to recognize is that not everyone is supposed to live in a constant state of intensity. While the rest of the world is trying to learn how to slow down and enjoy life, many Nines already know how. And have a lot to teach the rest of us in that area.
3. Nines Seem to Have a Connection to Something Bigger
This is one of the more anecdotal patterns I’ve noticed about Nines.
Many Nines seem to have an almost uncanny sense of knowing.
They’ll have a feeling about a person. A relationship. A situation. A decision. And somehow, months later, they’ll turn out to be right. I don’t know exactly what to call it.
Intuition.
Discernment.
Wisdom.
A connection to something bigger than themselves. Whatever it is, I’ve seen it often enough that I’ve stopped dismissing it.
The interesting part is that many Nines don’t trust it.
They second-guess themselves. They assume they’re imagining things. Or they keep their observations to themselves altogether. But when Nines learn to pay attention to that quiet inner knowing, it can become one of their greatest strengths. I’ve learned that when a Nine says, “I can’t explain it, but something feels off,” it’s usually worth listening.
Final Thoughts
Most descriptions of Nines focus on their peaceful nature. What I’ve noticed is that many Nines are far more interesting than they’re often given credit for. They’re comfortable to be around. They quietly wonder if they’re passionate enough. And they seem to possess an intuition that many people overlook. Those may not be the first things you’ll read about Nines. But they’re some incredible buried treasures I’ve noticed.
